Description
The Skilled Labour – Steel Fixer supports reinforced-concrete construction by preparing and fixing reinforcement steel according to drawings and site instructions. The role contributes directly to the strength and quality of concrete structures by ensuring that bars, links and mesh are cut, bent, positioned and secured correctly before concrete is poured.
Key Responsibilities
- Read bar details, reinforcement drawings and bending schedules under the direction of the site supervisor.
- Measure, cut and bend reinforcement bars to the required dimensions and shapes.
- Place and tie steel bars, links and mesh in the specified positions and spacing.
- Install spacers and chairs to maintain the required concrete cover and reinforcement levels.
- Check reinforcement arrangements before concrete placement and correct issues identified by supervisors or inspectors.
- Keep the work area organised and follow site safety procedures when handling steel and tools.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Practical steel-fixing experience on building, civil or infrastructure construction sites is valuable.
- Ability to understand basic reinforcement drawings, measurements and site instructions is important.
- The candidate should be comfortable using hand tools and reinforcement-fixing equipment.
- Good awareness of manual handling, personal protective equipment and site safety is required.
- Reliability, teamwork and careful workmanship are essential.
Skills and Competencies
The role requires accurate measurement, cutting, bending and tying of reinforcement. Workers should have good hand skills, physical stamina and the ability to follow drawings and instructions. Attention to bar spacing, concrete cover and safe material handling helps maintain quality and reduce rework.
