Ophthalmology Subspecialist (LOCUM)

The Ophthalmology Subspecialist provides comprehensive medical and surgical eye care to eligible patients. The post includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and procedures for a range of eye conditions, while contributing to preventive and curative healthcare programmes. This is a locum appointment intended for a qualified clinician able to work effectively within a group medical practice.

The clinician is expected to make sound decisions, explain treatment options clearly, and coordinate care with other healthcare professionals. Clinical work must remain within approved expertise and privileges, with careful documentation and attention to patient safety during routine, urgent, and surgical care.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess and diagnose medical and surgical conditions affecting the eye and visual system.
• Order and interpret appropriate general or specialist tests to support diagnosis and management.
• Perform non-invasive and invasive procedures within approved ophthalmology and subspecialty privileges.
• Provide elective and emergency eye surgery as appropriate to the clinician’s approved scope.
• Use YAG and Argon laser applications when clinically indicated and within competency.
• Participate in coordinated preventative and curative care programmes and maintain appropriate clinical records.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Three years of ophthalmology practice after board qualification, with evidence of expertise, is specified.
• A valid licence to practise medicine is required.
• Excellent spoken and written English is required.
• The role requires the ability to work within a group medical practice.
