Ophthalmology Consultant

The Ophthalmology Consultant leads specialist eye-care services for patients who need assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for ophthalmic conditions. The role is expected to model clinical excellence, make sound treatment decisions and support quality, patient safety and the development of junior medical staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess referrals and perform comprehensive eye examinations appropriate to the patient’s presentation.
• Diagnose and manage ophthalmic disorders, determine the need for further investigations and provide suitable treatment plans.
• Coordinate inpatient, outpatient and urgent care, including appropriate referral and follow-up pathways.
• Discuss findings, treatment choices, risks and follow-up needs with patients and families, securing consent when required.
• Collaborate with other specialties and support services to coordinate care for patients with complex needs.
• Participate in on-call coverage, clinical audits, incident reporting, quality improvement and service planning.
• Supervise and teach junior doctors and maintain current specialty knowledge through continuing professional development.

Requirements and Qualifications

• A recognised medical degree and approved postgraduate qualification in Ophthalmology are required.
• Applicants must satisfy DOH consultant professional qualification and experience requirements.
• A valid DOH licence or eligibility for consultant practice is expected.
• Evidence of current registration and continuing medical education is important.
• Candidates should have experience providing specialist eye care and leading clinical decision-making.
