Description

Job Overview

Khalifa University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a multi-grant programme in genomic epidemiology and pathogen genomics. The role will investigate bacterial and viral evolution, transmission patterns, and antimicrobial resistance using whole-genome sequencing, genomic surveillance, and comparative analysis across human, animal, food, and environmental settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead large-scale genomic epidemiology analyses of bacterial and viral pathogens using suitable sequencing and surveillance datasets.
  • Apply comparative genomics and phylogenetic methods to investigate pathogen evolution, transmission dynamics, and clinically important lineages.
  • Examine antimicrobial-resistance patterns and associated plasmids where relevant to the research questions and data available.
  • Contribute to outbreak investigation and develop evidence that supports integrated genomic-surveillance frameworks.
  • Collaborate with laboratory-based researchers and help coordinate sequencing and analysis activities across connected projects.
  • Support PhD students, share methods and findings, and work with faculty across pathogen-related research studies.
  • Prepare research outputs and communicate findings clearly while managing tasks, deadlines, and project documentation.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A PhD from a reputable university in Genomics or a related discipline is required.
  • Candidates should have experience conducting assigned research tasks and be ready to manage their workload with growing independence.
  • Strong reasoning, problem-solving, and English communication skills are required.
  • Applicants should be able to collaborate across a team handling multiple tasks and competing deadlines.
  • Experience with pathogen genomics, whole-genome sequencing, comparative genomics, phylogenetics, or antimicrobial resistance is relevant to the research focus.

Key Skills

  • Genomic data analysis, pathogen surveillance, and scientific interpretation.
  • Collaborative research, scientific writing, and project coordination.
  • Analytical problem-solving, clear communication, and responsible data management.

Work Approach

The successful candidate is expected to work professionally with colleagues and stakeholders, maintain reliable records, communicate progress clearly, and follow applicable university policies. Careful planning, responsible handling of information, attention to quality, and a willingness to improve processes will help support consistent outcomes in this role.
