Welding Technician

Kitopi is seeking a capable Welding Technician to support maintenance and fabrication work. The role involves joining and shaping metal components, using welding and cutting equipment safely, and completing tasks to the required quality and schedule. The successful candidate should be practical, safety-conscious and able to work independently while coordinating with maintenance and technical colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out steel welding and metal fabrication tasks according to job requirements and technical instructions.
• Operate welding machines, grinders, cutting equipment and related tools safely.
• Measure, cut, prepare and join metal components, checking alignment and finish.
• Interpret technical drawings and take accurate measurements before starting fabrication work.
• Inspect completed welds and fabricated parts, identify defects and carry out repairs where required.
• Perform routine maintenance checks on welding equipment and tools and report faults promptly.
• Use suitable personal protective equipment and follow all workplace safety procedures.
• Coordinate with maintenance and technical teams to complete jobs on time and to the required standard.
• Keep the work area clean and organised and store tools and materials appropriately.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Two to three years of experience as a steel welder or fabricator.
• Practical skills in steel welding and metal fabrication.
• Knowledge of MIG/MAG and ARC welding techniques; TIG welding experience is an advantage.
• Ability to read technical drawings and take precise measurements.
• Knowledge of steel materials, welding joints, fabrication methods, cutting tools and grinding equipment.
• Strong attention to detail, commitment to safety and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Relevant welding certification or technical training is beneficial.

Skills and Work Approach

Quality, precision and safe equipment handling are essential. The technician should understand when a repair requires further review, communicate progress clearly and maintain a tidy workspace. Reliable attendance, careful inspection and the ability to coordinate with other technical staff will help ensure jobs are completed efficiently and safely.
