Description

The Staff Nurse provides direct and indirect age-specific care to patients in the Maternal Newborn Unit, delivering safe, evidence-based nursing services during scheduled shifts. The role includes comprehensive nursing responsibilities such as assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and care coordination across the continuum of care. The nurse practices within the scope of international and national regulations, including Joint Commission International (JCI) standards and International Patient Safety Goals.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Provides age-specific, patient-centered care using the nursing process.
  • Performs comprehensive assessments using age-appropriate and problem-focused techniques.
  • Conducts ongoing evaluations of maternal and newborn physical and psychological needs.
  • Involves patients, families, and care teams in care planning and delivery.
  • Collaborates with multi-disciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Coordinates critical care pathways and prioritizes care based on clinical assessments.
  • Revises and updates care plans based on patient response.
  • Initiates safe and timely transfer/discharge plans.
  • Recognizes and responds to subtle clinical changes or potential complications.
  • Accurately documents all patient care activities in alignment with hospital policies.

Operational Support

  • Ensures the availability and maintenance of necessary supplies and medical equipment.
  • Assists with clerical and administrative tasks as needed to support unit operations.
  • Participates in staff meetings, quality projects, and unit-based committees.
  • Maintains a safe and organized clinical environment in accordance with infection control and safety standards.

Professional Standards & Education

  • Complies with mandatory education requirements including fire, safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness.
  • Administers and manages narcotic, controlled, and semi-controlled substances in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintains clinical competencies in pain management, maternal and newborn care, and the use of emergency care devices.
  • Completes yearly clinical competencies, including those specific to critical care nursing (basic).
  • Actively participates in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities such as incident reporting and quality audits.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development, keeping current with nursing best practices.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned to support patient care and unit needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (minimum three (3) years full-time course duration)
    or
  • Diploma in Nursing with current licensure and appropriate clinical experience.
  • Valid License/Registration to practice nursing in the home country and/or country of last employment (where applicable).
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Additional certifications (e.g., Neonatal Resuscitation Program - NRP) are preferred.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent post-graduate experience in Maternal Newborn Nursing.
  • Demonstrated skills in:
    • Assessing maternal and newborn physical and psychological needs.
    • Coordinating, planning, and prioritizing individualized care.
    • Delivering care that is age-appropriate and culturally sensitive.
