Position Summary

The Staff Nurse – Emergency Department provides high-quality, direct, and indirect age-specific care to paediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Care is delivered using the nursing process—assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation—in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The nurse plays a vital role in patient triage, emergency interventions, patient education, and coordination of multidisciplinary care, while adhering to Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) standards and hospital protocols.

Key Responsibilities

General Nursing Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient-centered, age-specific care using the nursing process.
  • Perform accurate and thorough patient assessments, including continuous evaluation of physical and psychological needs.
  • Involve patients, families, and healthcare teams in care planning and decision-making.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care and revise care plans as needed.
  • Recognize early signs of clinical deterioration and take prompt action.
  • Ensure thorough and timely documentation of all assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the medical record.
  • Maintain and ensure availability of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Safely administer Narcotic/Controlled and Semi-Controlled drugs and ensure accurate documentation as per policy.
  • Participate in unit-based CQI activities, such as incident reporting, customer complaints, and performance audits.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Participate in unit goals, staff meetings, and mandatory educational programs (e.g. fire safety, infection control).

Emergency Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Triage patients using Emergency Severity Index (ESI) or Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) protocols.
  • Implement and update Emergency Department guidelines, protocols, and new processes.
  • Anticipate and respond to changes in patient acuity and departmental workload.
  • Provide timely, evidence-based emergency nursing interventions according to clinical needs.
  • Assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures alongside medical colleagues.
  • Ensure accurate medication administration and documentation, including during high-stress scenarios.
  • Coordinate and communicate patient transfers and initiate discharge planning and instructions.
  • Assist new staff during orientation and contribute to their clinical development.
  • Support infection prevention measures by following reporting and documentation protocols.
  • Maintain emergency equipment (e.g. crash cart, refrigeration logs) and conduct routine checks.
  • Ensure comprehensive handover at shift change for continuity of care.
  • Participate in home visits when required.
  • Float to other departments as needed based on patient care demands.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (minimum 3-year full-time course)
    or
  • Nursing Diploma/Degree (minimum 2 years) + registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia
  • Current valid license/registration to practice nursing in home country and/or last place of employment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS/BCLS) certification (mandatory)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – to be obtained within 6 months of employment (provided through hospital)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – mandatory
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – preferred
  • CTAS certification – preferred

Professional Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent post-graduate experience in an Emergency Department
  • Demonstrated experience providing care across all age groups, with sensitivity to developmental and cultural needs
  • Proficient in emergency triage, patient prioritization, and rapid response to critical situations
  • Strong skills in patient and family assessment, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration
