Description
Position Summary
The Senior Staff Nurse – Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) Clinic is responsible for overseeing the daily clinical operations of the OB/GYN outpatient department. This role provides leadership, guidance, and support to nursing staff and ensures optimal patient flow, quality care delivery, and adherence to clinic protocols. The Senior Nurse acts as a clinical resource, coordinating care and administrative responsibilities under the guidance of the Nurse Manager, while promoting a patient- and family-centered care approach.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
- Coordinate daily clinic functions including admissions, discharges, and patient flow, ensuring patients are seen and discharged in a timely manner.
- Supervise, guide, and support staff nurses and care assistants in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of direct patient care.
- Ensure accurate and complete documentation is maintained per hospital policies and regulatory standards.
- Foster effective communication between nursing staff, patients, families, and physicians.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes and continuity of care.
- Promote a safe, therapeutic, and welcoming environment for patients, families, and staff.
- Monitor and support compliance with clinical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and ensure completion of all audits and reports, including:
- Patient satisfaction (e.g., Press Ganey)
- Incident and complaint reporting
- CRM task closure
- Nursing pre-screening 48 hours prior to appointments
- Monthly environmental rounds and action plan follow-ups
- Quality checklist and patient safety board updates
- Ensure efficient stock management and liaise with Materials Management to reduce excess inventory and eliminate slow-moving items.
- Monitor and resolve insurance authorization issues, coordinating closely with insurance coordinators to ensure timely approvals and patient notifications.
- Prevent walkouts by proactively managing patient flow, delays, and expectations.
- Assist in preparation and presentation of nursing slides for monthly Quality Improvement (QI) meetings.
- Follow up on unutilized approved tests and ensure proper scheduling.
- Lead initiatives for patient safety, risk management, and clinical compliance.
Unit-Specific Clinical Responsibilities
- Perform and support OB/GYN-specific procedures and interventions per established standards of care, including but not limited to:
- Colposcopy assistance
- Cryotherapy support
- Endometrial biopsy assistance
- Bartholin cyst excision support
- Cervical cerclage removal
- Maintain competency according to the “Green Book” Clinical Competency List.
- Ensure all staff adhere to uniform/dress code standards and maintain a professional appearance.
- Provide ongoing clinical mentorship and guidance to junior staff and newly hired nurses.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (minimum of 3 years full-time)
or - Diploma/Degree in Nursing (minimum 2 years) with registration from an approved regulatory body in: Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia.
- For UAE Nationals: Graduates from UAE or international universities are exempt from clinical training requirements (must submit birth certificate and mother’s family book).
- For Non-UAE Nationals (UAE graduates): Must complete 6-month clinical training at an APS-recognized facility.
- Must hold a valid nursing license/registration in home country and/or country of last employment.
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory.
- Additional certifications relevant to OB/GYN nursing are an advantage.
Professional Experience
- Minimum of 3–5 years of recent post-graduate experience in an Obstetrics and Gynecology setting.
- Prior experience as a Team Leader or Senior Registered Nurse is an advantage.
- Proven ability to deliver care across diverse patient age groups and clinical needs.
- Strong skills in patient assessment, care coordination, clinical decision-making, and prioritizing nursing care.
- Effective leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.
