Description

The Consultant Physician is responsible for providing expert clinical care aligned with international standards of best practice within their area of medical specialization. This role includes diagnostic and therapeutic duties, administrative oversight, mentoring junior staff, and promoting clinical excellence, research, and continuous education within the department. The Consultant serves as a clinical leader and ensures adherence to SEHA policies, performance metrics, and quality initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Administrative & Managerial Duties
  • Support, implement, and uphold hospital and departmental policies, protocols, and initiatives.
  • Participate in the organization’s performance management systems, including peer reviews, productivity assessments, and utilization reviews.
  • Assist in departmental scheduling to ensure adequate clinical coverage.
  • Attend divisional meetings and contribute to operational planning.
  • Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new medical staff.
  • Perform other administrative or clinical responsibilities as delegated by the Division Chief.
2. Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provide expert diagnosis, management, and treatment in line with specialty standards and established protocols.
  • Supervise junior medical staff and ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality care.
  • Lead inpatient ward rounds and outpatient clinics; ensure timely reassessment of care plans.
  • Accurately document all clinical encounters in the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.
  • Order and review diagnostic tests, adjust treatments based on findings, and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in and support multidisciplinary team meetings to develop comprehensive care plans.
  • Accept and manage referrals from Emergency Departments, primary care providers, other specialties, and external hospitals.
  • Obtain informed consent and provide appropriate procedural explanations to patients and families.
  • Maintain availability for rotational on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Foster a team-based, collaborative approach to patient care and staff engagement.
3. Quality & Safety
  • Promote and support department-led quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in regular clinical audits and utilize findings for practice enhancement.
  • Ensure timely reporting and resolution of adverse events and safety concerns.
  • Adhere to infection control, occupational health, and safety standards.
4. Education & Research
  • Mentor and supervise junior clinicians, residents, and fellows.
  • Facilitate internal training sessions and promote continued professional development.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Continuing Medical Education (CME).
  • Participate in clinical research, academic publication, and evidence-based advancement within the specialty.
  • Remain current on literature, innovations, and technologies relevant to the field.
5. SEHA and Facility Compliance
  • Adhere to all SEHA regulations and facility-specific protocols.
  • Maintain up-to-date licensure, certification, CME requirements, and mandatory training.
  • Uphold confidentiality standards and ethical practices in all patient and professional matters.
  • Promote a customer-focused culture and act as a brand ambassador for the organization.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities and adhere to associated protocols.
  • Contribute to the mentorship and professional development of UAE National staff.

Qualifications & Experience

Educational Requirements
  • Required: Medical degree with specialization from:
    • Tier 1 Institution
      OR
    • Tier 2 Institution (see SEHA’s classification list)
  • Current national license (or equivalent).
  • Certified proof of ongoing Continuing Medical Education (CME) activity.
Experience Requirements
  • Tier 1 Candidates: Minimum 2 years of post-board certification experience as a Consultant or equivalent.
  • Tier 2 Candidates: Minimum 8 years of full-time, post-board certification experience in an internationally accredited institute (fellowship years included).
For UAE Nationals:
  • Clinical subspecialty fellowship following a primary board certification may count toward experience:
    • Each year of fellowship = 2 years of consultant-level experience.
    • Eligible only if fellowship completed in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA, or a HAAD-accredited program.
