Description
The Consultant Physician is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based clinical care and serving as a leader in their specialty area. This role includes clinical service delivery, supervision of junior staff, participation in quality and safety initiatives, and engagement in education and research. The Consultant is expected to act as a role model for clinical excellence, ethics, and professionalism while contributing to the overall mission of the hospital and the SEHA network.
Key Responsibilities
Managerial/Administrative Duties- Support and implement all hospital, departmental, and divisional policies, initiatives, and performance improvement programs.
- Participate in peer review, productivity metrics, and utilization review systems.
- Assist in workforce scheduling and ensure adequate clinical coverage.
- Attend and contribute to departmental and divisional meetings.
- Participate in the recruitment of new staff as appropriate.
- Undertake administrative or clinical assignments as delegated by the Division Chief.
- Diagnose and manage patients in accordance with the highest standards of medical practice.
- Oversee the clinical activities and performance of junior medical staff.
- Lead inpatient rounds and outpatient consultations.
- Ensure accurate, timely documentation in medical records and electronic systems.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests; adjust treatment plans accordingly.
- Coordinate care with other specialties and healthcare providers.
- Ensure proper preparation of patients for procedures, including informed consent.
- Accept and manage referrals from internal and external sources.
- Participate in rotational on-call coverage, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
- Maintain clear communication with patients and families, respecting confidentiality and consent protocols.
- Promote teamwork and a collaborative care environment.
- Lead or actively participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department.
- Encourage and utilize clinical audit results to enhance care delivery.
- Report, investigate, and contribute to the management of adverse events or clinical incidents.
- Mentor and supervise junior medical staff, including interns and residents.
- Facilitate and/or participate in CME activities and clinical teaching.
- Promote research, quality publications, and evidence-based clinical advancements.
- Stay abreast of current medical literature, innovations, and technologies relevant to the specialty.
Facility-Specific Duties & Compliance
SEHA Compliance and Policy Adherence- Consistently comply with SEHA policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Complete all regulatory requirements including licensure, certifications, and mandatory training within designated timeframes.
- Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies.
- Act as a professional ambassador of the hospital, upholding patient-centered values and service excellence.
- Adhere to all occupational health and safety protocols and infection control policies.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and disaster response plans.
- Proactively seek continuous learning and development opportunities.
- Maintain professional appearance and behavior in line with workplace expectations.
- Support the training and mentoring of UAE national staff as required.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Certification (Required)- Medical Degree from a recognized institution.
- Board certification in relevant specialty from a Tier 1 or Tier 2 institution:
- Tier 1: Minimum of 2 years of post-board certification experience as Consultant or equivalent.
- Tier 2: Minimum of 8 years full-time experience as Consultant post-certification (includes fellowship).
- Current national license or eligibility for licensure with the Department of Health (DOH) – Abu Dhabi.
- Annual CME certification.
- Clinical fellowship training in recognized countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) or HAAD-accredited programs may substitute experience:
- Each fellowship year equates to two years of clinical experience.
- Only applicable to clinical subspecialty fellowships.
- Research publications and academic involvement preferred.
- Experience in a JCI-accredited institution is a plus.
