Description
The Consultant Physician is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based medical care to patients in accordance with the highest clinical standards. This role involves clinical leadership, diagnosis, treatment, patient safety, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to departmental development. The Consultant will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes and compliance with SEHA policies and international best practices.
Key Responsibilities
A. Managerial / Administrative Responsibilities- Support and implement hospital and departmental policies and initiatives.
- Participate in the hospital’s performance management system (peer review, utilization review).
- Assist with medical staff scheduling to ensure continuous clinical coverage.
- Attend and contribute to divisional and interdepartmental meetings.
- Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new clinical staff as needed.
- Perform other administrative or clinical duties assigned by the Division Chief.
- Provide expert diagnostic and therapeutic care in line with specialty standards.
- Supervise and oversee junior medical staff; ensure safe, effective patient care delivery.
- Lead ward rounds and outpatient clinics; reassess patient treatment regularly.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all clinical interactions in EMRs.
- Review and interpret diagnostic results; adjust care plans accordingly.
- Liaise with other medical and support services for integrated care delivery.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to enhance treatment planning.
- Obtain informed consent for all procedures and communicate effectively with patients and families.
- Respond to referrals and provide consults from Emergency, OPD, other hospitals, or walk-ins.
- Participate in on-call and after-hours duties on a rotational basis, including nights and holidays.
- Promote collaborative, team-based patient care and maintain professional work relationships.
- Champion quality improvement projects and initiatives within the department.
- Participate in regular clinical audits and apply findings to improve practice.
- Report and respond appropriately to adverse events and safety concerns.
- Maintain compliance with infection control, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.
- Mentor and supervise residents, fellows, and junior physicians.
- Promote and engage in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.
- Contribute to departmental teaching sessions and clinical training programs.
- Support and participate in research, quality improvement, and scholarly publication efforts.
- Stay current with emerging trends and evidence-based developments in the specialty.
SEHA-Specific Responsibilities
- Adhere to SEHA policies, procedures, and operational standards.
- Maintain up-to-date licensure, certification, and mandatory training requirements.
- Protect patient confidentiality in accordance with facility policies and data privacy regulations.
- Promote a customer-focused, professional culture in all stakeholder interactions.
- Foster positive interdepartmental collaboration to ensure integrated patient services.
- Uphold Occupational Health and Safety and Infection Control standards.
- Demonstrate readiness to support emergency preparedness protocols.
- Support training and development of UAE Nationals as per regulatory expectations.
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Requirements
Required:- Medical qualification from a Tier 1 or Tier 2 institution.
- Valid national medical license or equivalent.
- Documented proof of annual CME (Continuing Medical Education) activities.
Professional Certification
Required:- Completion of a specialty board certification.
- For Tier 1: Minimum 2 years post-board experience as Consultant.
- For Tier 2: Minimum 8 years full-time post-board certification experience (including fellowships) in an internationally accredited institution.
- Each year of clinical fellowship in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA, or HAAD-accredited program may count as two years of consultant-level clinical experience.
