Description
To provide advanced medical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of patients within the physician’s specialty. The Consultant Physician will supervise junior medical staff, lead patient care initiatives, promote continuous education and research, and support departmental quality improvement efforts, in line with SEHA standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Managerial / Administrative
- Support and implement hospital, departmental, and divisional initiatives, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in performance management systems including peer reviews, productivity, and utilization reviews.
- Assist in scheduling and ensure adequate clinical coverage in the division.
- Attend and contribute to departmental/divisional meetings.
- Assist in recruitment processes when required.
- Carry out additional clinical or administrative duties as assigned by the Division Chief.
2. Technical / Clinical
- Lead and perform patient assessments, diagnoses, and treatment following best practice guidelines within the consultant’s specialty.
- Supervise junior medical staff and assume responsibility for their clinical output.
- Ensure compliance with all protocols related to admissions, consultations, surgical procedures, discharges, outpatient services, and documentation.
- Conduct and lead ward rounds; reassess patient conditions and modify treatment accordingly.
- Review diagnostic investigations and tailor patient management plans based on clinical findings.
- Collaborate with other medical specialties and support services to ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Lead multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings for complex case planning.
- Ensure informed consent is obtained for all procedures.
- Accept referrals from internal and external sources (ED, clinics, hospitals).
- Participate in the on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Provide clear and empathetic communication to patients and their families.
- Foster teamwork and collaborative relationships within and across departments.
3. Quality & Safety
- Promote a strong culture of patient safety and clinical excellence.
- Support internal audits and use findings to drive clinical improvements.
- Participate in incident reporting and lead investigations as required.
- Ensure compliance with infection control, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.
4. Education & Research
- Guide, supervise, and mentor junior doctors, interns, and residents.
- Facilitate continuous medical education (CME) and specialty-relevant training.
- Participate in clinical research and contribute to publications where applicable.
- Stay current with industry literature, research, and technological advancements.
Facility-Specific & Compliance Responsibilities
- Comply with SEHA’s policies, licensing, and regulatory training requirements.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and ethical standards at all times.
- Serve as a brand ambassador for the facility, ensuring high-quality service to all stakeholders.
- Foster positive relationships across departments and with external partners.
- Adhere to safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness standards.
- Support the development and mentoring of UAE Nationals within the workforce.
Qualifications & Experience
Required Qualifications
- Tier 1 Qualification (recognized international board certification)
- Minimum: 2 years post-board certification experience as a Consultant.
- Tier 2 Qualification
- Minimum: 8 years of full-time clinical experience post-board certification (fellowship years may be included).
- For UAE Nationals
- Clinical subspecialty fellowship training in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA, or HAAD-accredited programs may count toward required years of experience (1 fellowship year = 2 experience years).
- Current, valid national medical license (or equivalent).
- Documented CME participation annually.
Desired Qualifications
- Subspecialty fellowship certification (if applicable).
- Prior leadership experience within a clinical team or healthcare committee (preferred but not mandatory).
