Description
Job Overview
Khalifa University is recruiting a full-time Post Doctoral Fellow for research into computational modelling of reinforced thermoplastic pipes and composite pipe systems. The project focuses on advanced simulation of multilayer materials and structural behaviour. The fellow will conduct independent analysis, contribute to publications, and collaborate with researchers working on engineering materials and pipe-system performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct computational research on reinforced thermoplastic pipes and composite pipe systems under the project investigator’s guidance.
- Build and assess finite-element models for nonlinear analysis, large deformation, and multilayered material behaviour.
- Apply appropriate constitutive models and investigate composite mechanics, anisotropy, and relevant microscale effects.
- Use Abaqus and related tools to run simulations, evaluate results, and improve model reliability.
- Interpret research outputs, compare findings with available reference data, and document assumptions and methods clearly.
- Prepare manuscripts and technical reports, contribute to presentations, and collaborate with the wider research team.
- Explore the potential use of machine learning for material modelling or structural assessment when relevant to the project.
Requirements and Qualifications
- A PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is required.
- A strong foundation in continuum mechanics, computational solid mechanics, finite-element modelling, and constitutive modelling is expected.
- Hands-on experience with Abaqus, nonlinear analysis, user subroutines, and large-deformation problems is important.
- Knowledge of composite mechanics, anisotropy, micromechanics, and multiscale modelling is desirable.
- A strong publication record and evidence of independent research ability are expected; machine-learning experience is an advantage.
Key Skills
- Computational mechanics, numerical simulation, and finite-element analysis.
- Composite material modelling, scientific interpretation, and technical documentation.
- Research writing, independent problem-solving, and interdisciplinary teamwork.
Work Approach
The successful candidate is expected to work professionally with colleagues and stakeholders, maintain reliable records, communicate progress clearly, and follow applicable university policies. Careful planning, responsible handling of information, attention to quality, and a willingness to improve processes will help support consistent outcomes in this role.
