Description

The Core Laboratory Specialist for Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) is responsible for delivering advanced technical support and expertise to users of the Cryo-EM Facility. The role ensures safe and efficient daily operations, maintenance of specialized equipment, and user training, while strictly adhering to Khalifa University’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies. The Specialist plays a pivotal role in supporting the university's research mission through excellence in microscopy services, sample preparation, and data generation.

Operational Responsibilities

Laboratory Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all activities align with Khalifa University’s EHS regulations
  • Promote a culture of safety and enforce compliance within Cryo-EM spaces

Facility Operations & Technical Support

  • Manage day-to-day operations of Cryo-EM and sample preparation equipment
  • Provide specialized technical support to faculty, researchers, and students
  • Conduct training sessions for equipment use and best practices
  • Operate and maintain advanced cryo-EM instruments including:
    • Krios G4 300 kV
    • Glacios 200 kV
    • Talos 120 kV
  • Handle sample prep tools such as cryo-ultramicrotome, high-pressure freezer, cryo-confocal microscopes

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver hands-on support for cryo-EM imaging, data acquisition, analysis, and structure refinement
  • Ensure optimal instrument performance through routine checks and maintenance
  • Schedule and manage user access across cryo-EM tools and prep equipment
  • Stay current with emerging cryo-EM methodologies and technology developments
  • Guide interdisciplinary teams in planning and executing microscopy-driven experiments
  • Maintain accurate instrument logs, experimental records, and maintenance reports

Resource & Lab Management

  • Assist in budget planning and capital equipment procurement
  • Oversee inventory of consumables, spare parts, and lab supplies
  • Evaluate technical specifications and vendor bids for new equipment
  • Keep facility website updated with training calendars, equipment descriptions, and booking schedules
  • Advise faculty and researchers on the selection and purchase of accessories
  • Recommend customized training modules based on research needs

Research Services & Community Engagement

  • Contribute to ongoing research innovation and technical development
  • Collaborate with research teams to troubleshoot and enhance microscopy workflows
  • Liaise with academic departments and administrative units to streamline operations
  • Uphold confidentiality and information security protocols
  • Promote public engagement and interdepartmental collaboration

Other Expertise (Preferred)

  • Experience operating cryo-dual beam SEM/FIB systems
  • Demonstrated success in producing high-quality Cryo-EM samples for structural biology research

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Physics, Materials Science, or related field
  • Preferred: Master’s or PhD in relevant scientific or engineering discipline
  • Proven proficiency in cryo-EM sample preparation and cryo-TEM operation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative mindset

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years relevant professional experience in a research or core laboratory environment
  • Track record of supporting academic and/or commercial scientific teams
