Job Description:
This role provides leadership and strategic direction within the Government Relations team. The GR Principal aligns with internal and external stakeholders to deliver Telstra’s business agenda and corporate strategy. The role will work with the Head of Government Relations to assist with the delivery of T22 priorities, including driving outcomes that support the organisational restructure and advocating on key policy issues across the broad spectrum of sectors Telstra participates in.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing and progressing the GR team’s strategy, planning and collaboration Build and maintain strong relationships with government stakeholders and connect them with senior executives and relevant internal stakeholders when required.

- Assist in the resolution of escalated customer complaints and electorate issues that are raised via MPs
- Drive government advocacy across all jurisdictions to support Telstra’s corporate strategy, including issues relating to the retail energy market, telecommunications and the required legislative/regulatory change to support T22 restructure activity.

- Protect and enhance Telstra’s reputation with government stakeholders across all areas of the company’s activities
- Further Telstra’s commercial objectives by influencing government stakeholders to make decisions that are in the company’s best interests.

Job Requirements:
Qualification & Experience:
- Proven experience in Parliamentary process and legislative development and drafting
- Proven exposure and understanding of how regulatory and legislative processes work (knowledge of telco would be of assistance or other highly regulated sector) and the interactions of the political sphere.
- Proven success working with government stakeholders
- Experience in managing major programs of work
- Critical to have a highly developed understanding of the workings and procedures of the Australian Parliament, political system and departments
- Proven understanding of public policy development, with a preference for energy policy development
- Previous experience in technology, energy industry or telecommunications industry desirable
- Proven experience in business planning activities, including strategy development and execution
- Excellent negotiation, influencing skills and communication skills with the ability to interact and build relationships with senior stakeholders
- Experience working with stakeholders to identify and develop public policy positions
- Previous experience in a corporate environment desirable
- Advanced communication skills, including proven success in advocating a company position in a clear and compelling manner
